It’s the beginning of August 1995, and we’re in our sixth summer together. Karen says she’s been losing a lot of time. “There’s no use for me,” she laments, “I’m only living part of my life.”
Because of this, I feel uncertain about hypnotizing her again today. We’ve been spending less and less time with “her.” She is, at this time, truly a passenger in her own life. I tell her I’m sorry that I don’t spend as much time with her as I used to, but I feel all the work we’re doing with the others is temporary but important right now. She says she understands and we go on as before.
Juliann comes out and explains what happens at the evening “meetings.”
“We hold the meeting to tell everyone, especially Karen, what happens during the day. I wrote you notes on what happened yesterday, but I forgot them. Basically it went like this. In the morning, Josh punched Karen. Miles came out and punched Josh back. After Josh went to work, they all went to the pet shop together. It took fifteen minutes for all of them to look at the birds. Only two or three of us can look at any one time. We can look at things together, but we can only touch something one part at a time. When we take care of Link, we have to take turns. Later, after Josh came home, Karen 3 came out when he punched Ann for accidentally putting her feet on his jeans. That’s when Karen 3 called you.”
I’m trying to process the odd events of the day, and trying to calculate how many times Josh had hit Karen and which part of her had experienced it.
“I tell this to Karen at night,” Juliann continues, “when she’s sleeping so she’ll know what’s happened.” She pauses and looks at me and cocks her head. “Dr. Baer, if we all come together, will I die?” I’m taken aback by this question. I hadn’t really thought about it.
“No,” I say, “I don’t believe any part of you will be lost, will die. But you won’t be just yourself,” I add, “your own separate self.”
She thinks about this for a while. I’m not sure the issue is resolved for her, or for me.
